Widely enjoyed across Egypt and the Middle East, Ful Medames is considered one of the region’s most iconic breakfast foods. Its rich flavor, creamy texture, and high protein content make it a satisfying meal any time of day. 

The dish is traditionally prepared by simmering fava beans until tender, then lightly mashing them and mixing them with olive oil, garlic, cumin, and fresh lemon juice. It is often garnished with parsley, tomatoes, onions, or boiled eggs, depending on regional preferences. 

Ful Medames is commonly served with warm pita bread and fresh vegetables, making it a wholesome and flavorful staple of Middle Eastern cuisine. 

Cooking Method


  1.  Place the cooked fava beans in a saucepan. 
  2.  Add a small amount of water if needed. 
  3.  Heat gently over medium-low heat. 
  4.  Stir in the garlic, cumin, salt, and black pepper. 
  5.  Lightly mash some of the beans while leaving others whole. 
  6.  Add olive oil and lemon juice. 
  7.  Simmer for 5–10 minutes, stirring occasionally. 
  8.  Remove from heat and transfer to a serving bowl. 
  9.  Garnish with parsley, tomatoes, and onions if desired. 
  10.  Serve warm with pita bread.
