Korean Fried Chicken Recipe | Extra Crispy Yangnyeom Chicken

Korean Fried Chicken, also known as Yangnyeom Chicken, is famous for its incredibly crispy double-fried coating and irresistible sweet, spicy, and savory glaze. Unlike traditional fried chicken, the Korean method creates an ultra-light, crunchy exterior while keeping the chicken exceptionally juicy inside. The crispy chicken is coated in a glossy sauce made with gochujang (Korean chili paste), soy sauce, garlic, honey, and sesame oil, delivering the perfect balance of heat, sweetness, and umami. Popular throughout South Korea, this iconic dish is perfect for parties, game nights, family dinners, or served with pickled radish and steamed rice.

Cooking Method

  1. Pat the chicken dry with paper towels and season lightly with salt and black pepper.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, garlic powder, egg, and cold water to make a smooth batter.
  3. Dip each piece of chicken into the batter until evenly coated.
  4. Heat the vegetable oil to 325°F (165°C).
  5. Fry the chicken in batches for 8–10 minutes until lightly golden. Remove and drain for 5 minutes.
  6. Increase the oil temperature to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Fry the chicken a second time for 2–3 minutes until deep golden and extra crispy. Drain on a wire rack.
  8. In a saucepan, combine the gochujang, ketchup, soy sauce, honey, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, and rice vinegar. Simmer for 2–3 minutes until slightly thickened.
  9. Toss the hot fried chicken in the sauce until evenly coated.
  10. Garnish with toasted sesame seeds and sliced green onions. Serve immediately with steamed rice or pickled radish.
