Indian Garlic Naan Recipe | Soft Restaurant-Style Garlic Naan

Indian Garlic Naan is a soft, fluffy, and buttery flatbread traditionally baked in a tandoor oven and topped with fresh garlic, cilantro, and melted butter. A favorite in Indian restaurants around the world, this naan features a light, airy texture with slightly charred edges and a rich garlic aroma. Made with flour, yogurt, yeast, and a touch of sugar, the dough rises until soft before being cooked on a hot skillet or in the oven. Perfect for scooping up curries, dals, butter chicken, tikka masala, or paneer dishes, homemade Garlic Naan is an easy way to bring authentic Indian flavors to your table.

Cooking Method

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt.
  2. Add the yogurt, warm milk, warm water, and vegetable oil. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–1½ hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal portions.
  6. Roll each portion into an oval or teardrop shape about ¼ inch (6 mm) thick.
  7. Heat a heavy skillet or cast-iron pan over high heat until very hot.
  8. Place one naan onto the dry hot skillet and cook for 1–2 minutes, until bubbles form. Flip and cook the other side for another 1–2 minutes until golden with light charred spots.
  9. Mix the melted butter with the minced garlic, then brush generously over the hot naan. Sprinkle with chopped cilantro.
  10. Serve immediately while warm with your favorite Indian curries or grilled dishes.
