Indian Chana Masala Recipe | Authentic Chickpea Curry
Indian Chana Masala is a classic North Indian chickpea curry made with tender chickpeas simmered in a rich onion-tomato gravy infused with aromatic spices. This hearty vegetarian dish is a staple in Indian households and restaurants, known for its bold flavors, comforting texture, and satisfying protein content. Fresh ginger, garlic, tomatoes, and a blend of cumin, coriander, turmeric, garam masala, and amchur create a perfectly balanced curry that pairs beautifully with naan, bhatura, roti, paratha, or steamed basmati rice. Easy to prepare and naturally vegan, Chana Masala is an excellent choice for everyday meals or special occasions.
Cooking Method
- Heat the oil in a large pan over medium heat.
- Add the cumin seeds and allow them to sizzle for a few seconds.
- Add the chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
- Stir in the garlic, ginger, and green chilies, cooking for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Add the tomato puree and cook for 6–8 minutes, stirring occasionally until the oil begins to separate.
- Mix in the turmeric, coriander, cumin, red chili powder, garam masala, amchur, and salt. Cook for 1 minute.
- Add the cooked chickpeas and stir well to coat them in the masala.
- Pour in the water and simmer for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Lightly mash a few chickpeas to naturally thicken the curry.
- Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot with bhatura, naan, roti, paratha, or steamed basmati rice.
