Bobotie is a rich, flavorful, and traditional South African dish made with seasoned minced meat topped with a creamy egg custard and baked until golden. This beloved comfort food combines sweet and savory flavors, creating a unique and satisfying meal perfect for family lunches, dinners, and special occasions. 

Ground beef or lamb is cooked with onions, curry spices, herbs, and dried fruit such as raisins, giving the dish its signature depth of flavor. The meat mixture is topped with a smooth egg and milk custard, then baked until beautifully golden and set. The result is a hearty casserole with a delicious balance of spices, sweetness, and savory richness. 

Bobotie is traditionally served with yellow rice, chutney, vegetables, or salad, making it a complete and comforting South African meal. 

Cooking Method


  1.  Preheat oven and grease a baking dish. 
  2.  Soak bread in half of the milk until soft. 
  3.  Heat oil and cook onion until softened. 
  4.  Add ground meat and cook until browned. 
  5.  Stir in curry powder, raisins, soaked bread, salt, and pepper. 
  6.  Transfer the mixture to the baking dish. 
  7.  Beat eggs with the remaining milk and pour over the meat. 
  8.  Place bay leaves on top. 
  9.  Bake until the custard is set and golden brown. 
  10.  Serve warm with rice or vegetables.
