Mongolian Beef Recipe | Easy Restaurant-Style Mongolian Beef Stir-Fry

Mongolian Beef is a popular Chinese-American stir-fry featuring tender slices of beef coated in a rich, glossy garlic soy sauce with hints of ginger and brown sugar. Despite its name, the dish is not a traditional Mongolian recipe but has become a favorite in Asian restaurants worldwide. Thinly sliced flank steak is lightly coated in cornstarch, quickly seared until crispy, and tossed in a sweet and savory sauce with green onions. Perfect served over steamed jasmine rice or noodles, this easy homemade version delivers restaurant-quality flavor in just 35 minutes.

Cooking Method

  1. Slice the beef thinly against the grain and pat it dry with paper towels.
  2. Toss the beef slices with the cornstarch until evenly coated. Let stand for 10 minutes.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, water or beef broth, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes.
  4. Heat the vegetable oil in a large wok or skillet over high heat.
  5. Fry the beef in batches for 2–3 minutes, until lightly browned and crispy. Remove and set aside.
  6. Carefully drain excess oil, leaving about 1 tablespoon in the pan.
  7. Pour the prepared sauce into the skillet and bring to a gentle simmer.
  8. Cook for 2–3 minutes until the sauce slightly thickens.
  9. Return the beef and green onions to the skillet and toss until everything is evenly coated in the sauce.
  10. Garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions. Serve immediately with steamed rice or noodles.
